I am making a red velvet cake that calls for red wine vinegar but all I have is Balsamic. Is the taste going to be that dramatically different? If so I will just go to the store some other day and get some. I really don’t want to go today.

It’s a Bobby Flay recipe so I’m sure it’s good.

Uuuum, good question. Balsamic vinegar does taste a little different than red wine vinegar (being the balsamic vinegar a tad stronger that red wine vinegar) and even the texture is a bit different (balsamic tends to be a little thicker). But at the end of the day, both are vinegars. If you maybe water it down a bit, I would dare to say you could definetely give it a go and see what happens? (By the way, sorry to ask this but… vinegar in a cake?) I hope it will come out alright!

It’s quite different. I wouldn’t risk it, but then, I don’t really like balsamic vinegar.

the point of the vinegar isn’t so much for taste as a slight color alteration mixed with the chemical reaction of the acidity with the baking soda to make a lighter cake… mix a little baking soda and balsamic in a cup… see if the bubbles happen… should be fine, might be a little browner, but just put more coloring in.

It isn’t going to kill the taste… just alter it a little.

I wouldn’t risk it. But your one answer says you can. Are you a risk taker?
I could drink Balsamic vinegar out of the bottle!
